Sailwatch
Safety

Seamanship first.

Our apps support good seamanship. They never replace it.

The sea doesn't care how clever the software is. These principles shape every feature we build, every alert we sound and every claim we make. We'll hold ourselves to them in public.

01

An aid to the watch, never a replacement.

The skipper and crew keep a proper lookout by sight and hearing at all times, as the collision regulations require. Our apps add a second set of eyes.

02

Honest about limits.

The app always shows when it isn't working well, and we publish the conditions each product is designed for. No silent failures.

03

Alerts you can act on.

What it is, where, how far and how soon. We tune hard against false alarms, because an alarm people mute protects nobody.

04

A source for every rule and fee.

Local rules and prices carry a source and a "checked on" date. Confirm with the harbour master before you rely on them.

05

The skipper decides.

Our apps never change course, make a booking or buy a part on their own.

06

Your data is yours.

Sharing is opt-in and anonymised, and you can delete your data at any time.

07

Tested at sea before it ships.

Every release goes through trials aboard our test catamaran and with pilot crews, in real conditions.

08

Good habits come first.

Training, checklists and good habits matter most. Good tools make good sailors better; they don't make up for missing skills.

The rules of the road

Rule 5 still applies.

The international collision regulations require every vessel to keep a proper lookout by sight and hearing, and by all available means. Ahead is one of those means. It is not the lookout.

That's why it is designed for daylight and dusk in its first season, why it tells you plainly when glare, haze or spray limit what it can see, and why it sounds loud alarms rather than quiet notifications.

Seen something unsafe?

If any Sailwatch product ever behaves in a way that could put a crew at risk, we want to hear about it the same day.
